A Parent’s Guide to Education & Childcare in Bernal Heights

Bernal Heights is often called an “urban village,” and nowhere is that more evident than in our local schools. Whether you are looking for a Spanish immersion track near Precita Park or a tight-knit private academy near Cortland Avenue, the neighborhood offers a diverse educational landscape.

Here is how the local educational options break down for families living on the hill.

Public Elementary & K-8 Options (SFUSD)

Leonard R. Flynn Elementary Location: 3125 Cesar Chavez St (Near Precita Park) – Flynn is a cornerstone for families on the north side of the hill. It is best known for its dual-language pathway, offering a robust Spanish Immersion program alongside its General Education track. Because of its proximity to Precita Park, the “Flynn community” often spills out into the playground and local cafes after the bell rings. It’s a mid-sized school that maintains a “small town” feel, with staff and parents deeply interconnected.

Paul Revere Elementary School (K-8). Location: 555 Tompkins Ave. For parents wary of the stressful transition to San Francisco middle school, Paul Revere offers a rare K-8 continuity. Located on the southern slope, this school allows children to remain in the same environment from kindergarten through graduation. This long-term stability fosters deep mentorship between older and younger students. It is also noted for its diverse student body, which truly reflects the multicultural spirit of District 9.

Junipero Serra Elementary Location: 625 Holly Park Circle – If you want the “walk to school” dream, Junipero Serra is literally at the heart of the neighborhood, perched right next to Holly Park. It offers a Traditional K-5 program, making it a great fit for families seeking a straightforward, high-quality curriculum without the complexity of immersion tracks. Its central location means you’ll constantly run into teachers and classmates at the Saturday Farmers Market or playing on the Holly Park slides.

Private & Parochial Alternatives

Donum Dei Classical Academy Location: 1550 Treat Ave – Tucked away on Treat Avenue, Donum Dei provides a specialized Classical Education model. This is an intimate environment focusing on foundational logic, rhetoric, and faith-based character development. With a smaller student body, the education is highly personalized. Parents often choose this route for the school’s strong track record of preparing eighth-graders for the city’s most competitive high schools.

Saint Anthony–Immaculate Conception (SAIC) Location: 299 Precita Ave – SAIC is a neighborhood institution with roots stretching back to the 19th century. While it maintains its Catholic traditions, the school has modernized significantly, integrating arts and tech programs. Situated at the base of the hill, it serves as a bridge between Bernal and the Mission. The alumni network here is legendary; don’t be surprised to meet second or third-generation families at school events.
