Located in the Mission Bernal District just steps from Bernal Heights, El Rio is a legendary neighborhood bar and community space that has been a cornerstone of San Francisco’s nightlife since 1978. Originally founded as a Brazilian Leather Gay Bar by Malcolm and Robert, the venue was established to serve the Mission District and all “good folks.” Upon their retirement, leadership passed to “The Crew,” who continue to operate the establishment as a queer-run Mission mainstay.
As an LGBTQ+ owned and operated venue, El Rio serves as a gathering place and event space that prioritizes the BIPOC and Latine communities. The organization fosters an environment of mutual respect and creative expression, maintaining deep gratitude for the patrons and neighbors who have sustained the business for nearly five decades.
Mission and Community Commitment
El Rio serves as more than a nightlife destination; it is a community hub dedicated to social change and mutual aid. The venue’s operations are guided by several core commitments:
Inclusivity: The space remains welcoming to all people who lead with respect and kindness.
Social Change: The business actively invests in local communities to promote progressive social advocacy.
Support for the Arts: El Rio provides a vital platform for the local arts and music scene, offering space for creative growth and performance.
Mutual Aid: The venue strategically prioritizes under-resourced and undervalued communities for the use of its space, acting as a conduit to provide direct financial support to those in need.
Signature Parties
- Mango: Every 4th Saturday of the month (2 PM – 8 PM). A legendary daytime party for women and their friends, famous for non-stop dancing on the outdoor patio, hip-hop/R&B beats, and “warmest vibes.”

- Daytime Realness:<> Usually held on the 3rd Sunday of the month. This is a high-energy patio party hosted by Carnita and Stanley Frank, featuring “daylit” drag performances and house music. It’s known for a diverse, joyful crowd and often sells out in advance.
- Hard French: A periodic daytime dance party dedicated to 60s soul and R&B, known for its all-inclusive atmosphere and legendary status in the queer community.
