Holy Water: The High Altar of Bernal Heights Bars
Holy Water is a premier neighborhood cocktail and craft beer bar located in the heart of San Francisco’s Bernal Heights. Established in 2013 by veteran barman John Ottman, the space was transformed from a struggling “dog bar” into a meticulously curated destination. Known for its atmospheric “shabby-chic” religious decor and world-class drink selection, it serves as a community hub where the staff prioritizes hospitality over pretension.

The Drink Experience
Signature Cocktails: Home to the iconic “After the Gold Rush” (bourbon, pineapple gomme, apricot liqueur, and lime). The rotating menu features 12–15 handcrafted drinks, ranging from elevated classics to tropical “Painkillers.”
Curated Craft Beer: One of SF’s most respected beer lists. Owner John Ottman is known for personal “beer runs” to Southern California to secure rare kegs (e.g., Enegren, Highland Park, Russian River).
The 11th Hour: A nightly tradition starting at 11:00 PM where bartenders experiment with new, cutting-edge recipes. If you don’t enjoy the experimental creation, you don’t pay for it.
Private Barrel Selections: Features an extraordinary and rotating selection of exclusive Bourbon barrels.
Ambiance & Culture
Sacred Decor: The interior is famously adorned with vintage religious iconography, French and German prints, and over 200 rosaries. A large wall-length mural depicts a river baptism, creating a “church-like” haven for “sinners” and saints alike.
The “No Babies” Policy: While the bar is famously dog-friendly (continuing the tradition of its predecessor, Stray Bar), it maintains a strictly adult atmosphere; per the owner, “you can’t bring babies into his bar.”
Community Vibe: Often described as the “Cheers of Bernal Heights,” it is a place where “nobody has an ego,” and regulars are greeted by name.
