A Guide to Green Spaces in Bernal Heights
Tucked into one of San Francisco’s most beloved neighborhoods, Bernal Heights punches well above its weight when it comes to open space. The hill at its center is just the beginning.
This guide covers the full spectrum, from sweeping natural parks and a working urban farm to community gardens carved into steep hillsides and planted stairways that double as neighborhood landmarks. Whether you have an afternoon or just fifteen minutes, there is always somewhere to breathe.

MAJOR PARKS & NATURAL AREAS
MAJOR PARKS & NATURAL AREAS
Bernal Heights Park & Bernal Hill
The neighborhood’s crown jewel. A sweeping natural-area hill with winding trails through native grassland, 360-degree city views, and one of San Francisco’s most beloved off-leash dog areas. The centerpiece of Bernal life, and the place most residents mean when they say “the hill.”
Holly Park
A hilltop gem on Bernal’s south side with generous lawns, basketball and tennis courts, a playground, and panoramic views that locals know how to find. A quieter alternative to the main hill, and a favorite for families and picnickers.
Precita Park
On Bernal’s north slope, this long grassy park is a neighborhood gathering place. Community events, weekend picnics, families, and dog walkers all find their rhythm here. One of the most socially active parks in the area.
St. Mary’s Park & Recreation Area
At the southeastern edge of Bernal, this historic park offers sports fields, play areas, and a strong sense of community history. A go-to for organized recreation and active outdoor use in lower Bernal.

COMMUNITY GARDENS, FARMS & POCKET GREENSPACES
COMMUNITY GARDENS, FARMS & POCKET GREENSPACES
Alemany Farm (Alemany Blvd)
One of San Francisco’s largest urban farms runs along Alemany Boulevard at the southern base of Bernal. An education site and food-system anchor for the neighborhood. Volunteer days and open visits are available; check their schedule to get involved.
Bernal Heights Community Garden (Bernal Heights Blvd)
A resident-maintained garden brimming with flowers, herbs, and vegetables tended by neighbors. A vital community green hub that reflects Bernal’s hands-in-the-soil spirit.
Ogden Terrace
Terraced hillside plots where neighborhood residents grow produce & ornamental plants.
Ogden Avenue Gardens
A remarkable terraced hillside garden built on a “paper street” that was reimagined as a productive public landscape. Part food-growing space, part green corridor — one of Bernal’s most creative community projects.
Coleridge Mini Park
A small but beloved landscaped pocket park on Bernal’s eastern edge. Perfect for a quiet pause, a sliver of greenery that punches above its size as a neighborhood breathing spot.
Bernal Wild (Bernal Heights Park slopes)
A volunteer-stewardship habitat area on the slopes of Bernal Heights Park, with ongoing native plantings designed to support pollinators and local wildlife. A quiet, evolving corner of the hill managed by dedicated community stewards.
Good Prospect Community Garden
CPCG, an often-overlooked and unaccepted street nestled in the vibrant Bernal Heights District, is poised for a significant transformation.

STAIRWAYS & STAIRWAY GARDENS
Esmeralda Slide Park
A green stairway corridor with lush plantings and two concrete slides built into the hillside. Equal parts neighborhood garden and playful landmark — a genuinely unique Bernal institution.
Tompkins Stairway Garden
A community-maintained stairway lined with carefully tended plantings — flowers, shrubs, and greenery managed by neighbors who treat it as a linear garden. A peaceful ascent through living color.
Eugenia Street Stairs
A planted stair route connecting to Bernal Heights Park, lined with trees and smaller plantings that make the climb a layered sensory experience.
Montcalm Street Stairs
Another treed stairway route up toward the park, with established plantings giving the climb a green, shaded character.
Mayflower Street Stairs
A quieter stair route to the park slopes, with trees and small plantings adding greenery to the ascent.

VISITING TIPS
VISITING TIPS
On Bernal Hill: Arrive at sunrise or about an hour before sunset for the best light, fog views, and thinner crowds. The hill is exposed and can be windy year-round — bring a layer.
For dog owners: Bernal Hill’s off-leash area is one of the city’s best. Bring water for your dog; shade is limited on the upper slopes.
At the community gardens: the plots are maintained by residents. Please look, but don’t pick unless you’re a member or specifically invited.
At Alemany Farm: Check their schedule for volunteer days and open hours. The farm welcomes neighbors who want to get involved.
For stairway walks: All stairways are public and free. A combined Esmeralda–Tompkins loop makes a wonderful 45-minute neighborhood walk with good views and plenty of greenery.
For Bernal Wild: Look for volunteer stewardship events if you’d like to contribute to the native planting effort on the park’s slopes.
