Komaaj is a vibrant, culturally focused destination celebrating the distinct gastronomy of Northern Iran and the Caspian Sea region. Founded by Executive Chef Hanif Sadr, this space serves as a culinary bridge, moving beyond traditional kabob-heavy Persian menus to highlight fresh, herb-forward, and vegetable-centric dishes. The venue features an inviting, warm atmosphere filled with regional ceramics and textiles, creating an environment that feels like a cozy living room.
“Komaaj Food Group, started as a passion project in 2015 by our founding Executive Chef, Hanif Sadr, who as a new immigrant wanted to introduce the rich culinary traditions of the Northern Iranian region and his own family recipes through series of pop-up dining experience in the Bay Area.
Today, Komaaj brand of food and products is committed to creating an ecosystem of its culinary experience representing a unique Northern Iranian cuisine of a region that borders the Caspian Sea surrounded by the high-elevation ranges of Alborz Mountain through our dinning, catering and specialized bazaar products.”
The Experience:
Mazze & Wine: The heart of the restaurant is its mazze bar, offering shareable small plates that balance sour, sweet, and umami flavors. Pair these with a unique collection of regional wines from the Caucasus (Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Northern Iran) or house-made, alcohol-free Sharbats.
Northern Iranian Specialties: Look for dishes like Anar Polo (pomegranate rice with chicken), smoked fish (saffron-smoked sturgeon or sumac-smoked salmon belly), and signature dips like beet yogurt or eggplant and walnut stew, typically served with traditional Sangak flatbread.
More Than a Restaurant: The location also serves as a “Pila Bazaar,” featuring a deli counter for lunch wraps, bowls, and pantry staples such as imported spices, pickled vegetables, and house-preserved goods.
Hours:
